HISTORY OF SAUNA

Sauna is a Finnish-sami Word.It is believed to have a history of 6000 years. The historical date explains the fact that the sauna was noticed by other people as follows; At the end of the first century BC,the Finnish began to trade silk with Central Europe. Thus the Finnish culture emerged.Sauna bath is a sweat bath.It is based on the principle of stones heated by a fire source and heating a small room with these stones.According to American scientists, the source of sweat bath is America. They beileve that in Stone Age times Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait to establish lif in Asia.Later, there was migration from Asia to Europe and different races were formed.Accordingly, the culture of sweat chambers spread in America. As ı said, there is no definitive proof of this.

In the 1500s,Klaus Magnus wrote: Nowhere in the world has the use of the bathroom been as important as in the northern land.Private and public bathrooms are well equipped.Important people have fresh and clean water in their bathrooms, surrounded by elaborate gardens and flowers. In towns and villages there are public baths proportional to the population.

As a result of its regular us efor centuries, saunas have gained a spiritual identity. The following words are still known to the Finns today:Jokaisen on kayttaydyttava saunaa samalla tavalla kuin kirkossa.(on in the sauna feels like a church)There are other proverbs like this; If a sauna liqu or (light Finnis beer)or pine resin doesn’t work that disease can kill you.Sauna is what all kinds of pain, suffering, depravity and distress need.ıf it doesn’t help nothing will happend.

In the 19th century,European travelers were very interested in the Finnish culture, the sauna and they mentioned it a lot in their writings. It is not the sauna itself that attracts attention, but its contribution to social life.French writer Paul B.Du Chaillu The Land of the Midnight Sun?After extensive information about the sauna in his book titled,he mentions that the bath house is a hut on its own outside the buildings as a safety precaution againts fire.Every Saturday evening individual in the nothern countries traditionally share the same action;bathroom. One evening the neighbor of the family ı stayed with called out: Take a bath with us today Palulu.Palulu said it would be ok too.The family ı mentioned was a very large family and we took a bath together.A social life without a sauna is not considered here.

Socialism, which affected all of Europe in the middle of the 19th century, made the sauna the national symbol of Finland. The Industrial Revolution helped the rapidly spreading sauna culture at the end of the 19th century.Metal-surfaced sauna stoves responded to the increase in the number of saunas, allowing saunas to be made anywhere.Public multi-person saunas have increased rapidly with high-capacity stoves.

With the construction of the first electric stove in the 1930s sauna production entered its third phase. With the First and Second World Wars the sauna had the oppurtunity to be recognized all over the world.Of course the most important reason for this is defense saunas (big saunas) that the army makes on the fronts in order to improve the morale of the Finnish soldier and maket hem feel at home.

In the 20th century Finns started to trade saunas and sauna stoves.Today, more than 300 sauna stove companies in Finland produce over 10,000 stoves per year. There are only a few countries where Finland does not sell stoves their neighbor Russia is one of them.

According to the Finnish Statistical Institute in Finland with a population of 5.2 million ,1212 million saunas are located in homes and 800.000 saunas are in workplaces and sorporate areas.( 2002 data)0.42 saunas per capita, which is very close to the number of vehicle/population ratio in Finland.
